Is it time to replace your boiler?
Boilers last up to about 15 years. Annual servicing gives you the longest lifespan, but as a boiler ages it works harder to heat your home — becoming less efficient and more likely to fail. If yours is reaching that age, it's time to think about a replacement.
Temperature controls have also come a long way, so a new system lets you heat each area of your home more precisely.
Old boiler
Efficiency can be as low as 60% — meaning a large share of the gas you pay for never heats your home.
New conventional boiler
Roughly 80–85% efficient. A solid upgrade where venting or budget rules out condensing.
High-efficiency condensing boiler
Up to around 90% efficient or better, with lower gas bills and a smaller carbon footprint.
Choosing the right replacement boiler
Many old boilers are oversized for the homes they heat, especially after upgrades to windows and insulation. We size a new boiler from your home's actual heat loss rather than the rating on the old one, so it runs efficiently instead of constantly firing up and shutting down.
Most of the boilers we install today are modulating-condensing boilers. They adjust their output to match demand, and paired with an outdoor reset control they lower the water temperature on milder days, which is most days in the Lower Mainland. Lower water temperatures let a condensing boiler condense more of the time, and that's where its efficiency comes from. In-floor radiant systems, which run on low water temperatures, are a particularly good match.
We'll also look at how you get your hot water. A combi boiler handles heating and hot water in one compact unit, ideal for condos, townhomes and smaller houses. A boiler with an indirect hot water tank suits larger households that run several taps at once.
