What's usually behind them
Won't ignite
Often a worn thermocouple or thermopile, a failed igniter, dead batteries in the remote or receiver, or a gas valve that's been switched off. On an older unit, it may be time to consider a new insert.
Pilot won't stay lit
A dirty pilot assembly, a weak thermocouple or thermopile, or a draft problem in the venting can all put a pilot out.
Soot and lazy yellow flames
Usually logs that have shifted out of position, a blocked burner port, or an air shutter that needs adjusting. Heavy soot means incomplete combustion and should be checked soon.
Odours and noises
A short-lived smell at the start of the season can be dust burning off. A smell that lingers, or a roaring, whistling or popping burner, needs a technician.
Why fireplace repairs need a gas fitter
A gas fireplace combines gas valves, electrical controls and a sealed venting system, all in a space that gets very hot. Small mistakes, like logs placed wrong or a glass gasket that doesn't seal, can affect how the fireplace burns and where its exhaust goes. In BC, work on gas appliances has to be done by a licensed gas fitter, and all of our technicians are licensed by Technical Safety BC.
When we repair your fireplace, we don't stop at the part that failed. We clean the pilot and burner, check the gas pressure and the seal on the glass, and look over the venting, so it's ready for the rest of the season. To keep it that way, book an annual fireplace service.
